a’Beckett Road and Old a’Beckett Road

William Arthur Callander a’Beckett MLC, JP (1833-1901) son of Victoria’s first Chief Justice, Sir William a’Beckett, built The Grange in Narre Warren North in the 1860s. The Grange was well built with spacious formal gardens on all sides. The family coat of arms was inserted in the stained glass fanlight at the front entrance.

He and his wife Emma had four daughters and two sons. Their eldest son, William Gilbert a’Beckett was a member of the Berwick Shire Council for almost 20 years and Berwick Shire President 1919-1920. He and his brother in law Harry Walstab were instrumental in the establishment of the Kalora Park Cricket Club in 1908.

Bailey Road

William Bailey settled in Narre Warren North c1894. He is credited with having planted the first orchard of any size on his property at the eastern end of Bailey Road. Members of his family of nine each made a significant contribution to the development of the district. George established a general store in Narre Warren at the turn of the century. James became a successful orchardist and was for many years the senior JP in the Berwick district. Charles engaged in mixed farming and carrying. He, together with his sisters, was a very active member of the tennis club.

Tacaberry Avenue

Tacaberry Ave takes it name from Lt. Colonel William Thomas Tackaberry (correct spelling) who purchased 87 acres in Lot 6 Section 22 in 1937. William was a military man through and through. He served in the Boer War, World War 1 and World War 2. He married Linda Kate Nott in 1906, the couple had no children. William’s address was listed as Woodlands, Narre Warren North in the Who’s Who Australia 1938.

Tom Jones Court

Thomas Evan Jones (1898-1964) was the youngest son of Captain David Jones and his wife Jane of Tandderwen Orchard at Narre Warren North. Tom Jones was a member of the Kalora Park Tennis Club and the Kalora Park Cricket Club. His son Evan was a foundation member of the 1st Narre Warren North Scout Group, founded in 1932.

Winters Lane

Samuel and Alice Winter lived in a wattle and daub hut on the corner of Winters Lane and Hallam-Emerald Road, opposite the recreation ground in the mid 1870s. Samuel was a big strong man who engaged in general contract and handyman jobs in the district. He was also a mailman for a number of years, bringing the mail to Narre Warren North on horseback. For many years he filled the role of Father Christmas at school district functions and was a popular organiser of school picnics. His sons together with the Randle boys formed the backbone of the local cricket team for many years.
