John Byron was born in Albury a descendant of a pioneering family and lived / at Richmond NSW until the death of his father who was an instructor in / saddlery at Hawkesbury College. Leaving school at 15 John came to Melbourne / and became an air jockey on early commercial flights to King Island. /

This experience supplying rural farming communities was a forerunner to / his later success as NSW Manager for Daniel Harvey Machinery. In 1960 he / returned to Melbourne and began Cattlemen’s Equipment, incorporating Thunderbird Electric Fencing on the corner of Webb St and Princes Hwy. /

A President and Life Member of the Berwick Show Society and Life Member / of the Harness Horse Society of Victoria, John also assisted the development / of local youth programs, was President of the Opportunity Shop which he / organised to be built in Webb St, and a member of Narre Warren Rotary. /

For ten years John was a City of Berwick Councillor who gave strong support / to the work of voluntary groups. He was involved with heritage projects such / as The Cheese Factory and in emergency housing. During his time on Council / John served as Mayor in 1984-85 and was Chairman Southern Area of the / Melbourne Metropolitan Board of Works. /

John was a passionate supporter of global friendships between cities of / the world. He played a vital role in the current City of Casey Sister / City relationships and actively promoted their value to other cities. / He commenced the Sister City News and became National Chairman of / The Australian Sister Cities Association.

His global friendship work was internationally honoured with the prestigious / Dwight D Einsenhower Medal and he was awarded the Australian Centenary Medal for Service to the Community. /

This Reserve is named in honour of John Byron. /
