Hello Samantha

da13442We got an email from Samantha last week who said ‘hi I am wondering if you could please help me. I’m trying to find out where people would enlist in WW1 if they lived in the  Cranbourne area. It is a part of my school assignment and I am looking at one soldier in particular James Daws so if you have any records of where he signed up that would be a lot of help thankyou.’

It’s not the first email we’ve received from a student looking for information on Casey Cardinia soldiers and our excitement soon dies down when we realise that the email system at the school will not allow us to reply to emails that come from the student’s school email account. Samantha does not say which school she attends – so we’re posting our reply here.

Samantha, you can find information about James Daws here:

  1. AIF Project – some basic information
  2. Red Cross Wounded and Missing Files – from the Australian War Memorial website
  3. Service Record – the National Archives has his service record which will tell you where he signed up and a lot more
  4. James’ photo – from the Australian War Memorial collection (the one we’ve got here).

Good luck with your assignment Samantha!
