Hessel Road
These two signs are approximately 100 paces apart on Ernst Wanke Road at Harkaway. Which one is right?
Jacob William Hessel commenced teaching at the Harkaway Lutheran School in 1862. When the school was taken over by the Victorian Education Department in 1876, Jacob Hessel became the first teacher of Harkaway State School. He remained there until December 1882 when he went on leave due to ill health.
To the best of our knowledge, Jacob Hessel never signed his name as Hessell. His naturalization papers at the National Archives of Australia are repeatedly signed Hessel, advertisements, letters and notices he placed in papers are also signed this way. The headstone he erected for his wife Madeline and son Henry spells the surname as Hessel.
Jacob died at Balmain in 1904 and is buried in Rookwood Cemetery.
