The Shire of Cranbourne named the Square after my husband, Gregory William Clydesdale in 1989 in recognition of his 30 years dedicated service as Shire Engineer from 1957 to 1987. Greg died 3 months later with cancer.
Greg Clydesdale attended Lloyd Street Central School up to and including Year 8 – then went onto Melbourne Boys’ High School. He completed his Matriculation (year 12) but was too young to go to University. He repeated Year 12 – and has 9 passes in Year 12.
Greg won a Dafydd Lewis Scholarship which allowed him to attend Melbourne University where he graduated with a Civil Engineers Degree in 1949.
After completing his Degree, he worked for the Country Roads Board at Traralgon and Geelong. In 1957, he applied and was accepted for the position of Shire Engineer in Cranbourne.
Even though the growth has been dramatic in the last 20 years – it was gradually growing even from the time we arrived and the challenge was always there for him. Greg worked for 30 years without taking one sick day and working very long hours. Unfortunately, his retirement in 1987 was short as cancer was diagnosed very soon after retiring. He was very humble in accepting the great honour the Shire of Cranbourne bestowed on him.*Elizabeth Clydesdale
Dad was a hard working Public Servant that went beyond the call of duty to ensure Cranbourne was a nice place to live. He was a charter member of the Rotary Club and a handy middle order batsman as well !
