Born in 1735 in Yorkshire, England, Charles Green was the astronomer aboard the Endeavour. Together with James Cook, he observed the transit of Venus on the 3 June 1769 at Tahiti – the Endeavour’s first voyage.
The Endeavour left Tahiti on 13 July 1969 for New Zealand, the east coast of Australia including the southern tip of the Great Barrier Reef where Green Island was named by Cook and finally, for Charles Green, Jakarta (then called Batavia). Charles Green contracted dysentery while in Jakarta and died on board the Endeavour on 29 January 1771 and was buried at sea.
