This library, which incorporates materials from / the original 1862 building, has been constructed as / a grateful tribute to the early sponsors of the / Berwick Mechanics’ Institute and Free Library, to Baron Casey of Berwick and the City of Westminster, / KG, PC, GCMG, CH, DSO, MC, / and to the many voluntary workers who have given / such dedicated and thoughtful service to the / library during its long history.

This plaque commemorates the / centenary / of the signing of the / 500 year lease / of the land on which this building stands / granted by Robert Bain / for the purposes of / a Mechanics’ Institute and Public Library. / 12 March 1878

500 Year Lease

On 12 March 1878 Robert Bain as lessor signed a 500 year lease for the yearly rent of one shilling due on the 21st day of December if demanded and is signed by the first five trustees; James Gibb, Henry Searle, David Stewart Lindsay, Thomas C Camm and Robert Bain and witnessed by WH Fossey.
