Anzac Walk and Anzac Place

Anzac Walk is a 30-minute walk beginning at the corner of Kilvington Drive and Belgrave-Gembrook Road. The first stop is opposite the cenotaph across the road, and outside the National Bank. A compelling audio trail delivered by QR code to your phone delivers a totally immersive experience of Emerald in the Great War and the 32 diggers that did not return. The walk continues along Belgrave-Gembrook Road, crossing the railway line and along Memorial Avenue, finishing at the Emerald RSL. The information stands along the way provide a picture of most of the men and basic details of their life, service, death and burial. Listening to the audio trail along the way brings their stories to life. The walk concludes at the RSL and the statue of the unknown soldier.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old;
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.

Donovan Joynt VC

(photo caption) William Donovan Joynt / Lieutenant colonel / 19.3.1889-6.6.1986
For a period of his life, Donovan Joynt VC was a resident of Kallista, and a proud member of the Emerald RSL.
Donovan was one of a number of ex-servicemen who, in 1923, founded the Legacy Club of Melbourne. Donovan went on to lead that club’s successful campaign to have Melbourne’s Shrine of Remembrance built.

‘This Gallant Company of brave men….’
The Victoria Cross is the highest form of recognition that can be bestowed on a soldier for remarkable and unselfish courage in the service of others. / There is no greater single honour, award, or accolade available.

Donovan Joynt enlisted in the AIF on 21st May 1915 arrived in France in May 1916. Where he fought until August 1918. He was shot in the shoulder, commended in divisional orders, and promoted to lieutenant.
On 23rd August 1918, at age 29, and a lieutenant in the 8th Battalion, Australian Imperial Force, the following events occurred.
Lieutenant Joynt took charge when he found a company whose commander was killed. When the leading battalion had been demoralized by heavy casualties, he rushed forward and reorganized the remnants of the battalion. At Plateau Wood, he led the men forward and against heavy enemy fire took the German post and 50 prisoners. Joynt led his men without casualties into the German position and so forced them out of the woods.
3 days later he was badly wounded by a shell and evacuated to England, and later promoted to caption.
Donovan was awarded a VC for conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty.

Lone Pine

The Aleppo Pine (Pinus halepenisis)
Once covered the ridges overlooking Anzac Cove at Gallipoli, Turkey.
By 1915, the Turkish army had cut down all but one tree, to line and cover trenches to be used in the defence of the Gallipoli Peninsula.
The tree planted here is a direct descendant from the original, now known as the Lone Pine.
During three days in August 1915, in the vicinity of the Lone Pine, 3000 Anzacs and an estimated 7000 Turks lost their lives.
A cemetery was constructed on the Lone Pine site, and three Emerald locals who gave their lives during this battle lie at rest there.
The Lone Pine is recognized by the RSL as a symbol of the Anzac spirit.

Unknown Soldier

The field of Flanders and the Somme Contain the remains of more than 10,800 Diggers listed as Missing in Action on the Western Front between 1916 and 1918.
More than 46,000 of the 300,000 Australians who served on the Western Front were killed in battles from Passchendaele in Belgium to Rheims in France.

This statue to the Unknown Soldier, honours all Australian Servicemen and women killed in action serving their country.
